Bauchi State University, Gadau (BASUG)
Sa’adu Zungur University – SAZU/BASUG

Bauchi State University, Gadau  widely known as BASUG  is a state-owned university located in Gadau, Alkaleri Local Government Area, Bauchi State, North-East Nigeria. Established in 2011, it was recently renamed Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU) in honour of the revered Bauchi-born poet, teacher, and nationalist, Malam Sa’adu Zungur. The university’s official website and portals now operate under the SAZU branding at sazu.edu.ng. The institution is fully accredited and recognised by the National Universities Commission (NUC), and offers undergraduate, postgraduate, part-time, IJMB, and remedial programmes across multiple faculties. The current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Fatimah Tahir, the third substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university.

History of the Institution

Bauchi State University, Gadau was established under Bauchi State law in 2010, with academic activities taking off in January 2012. The university was conceived to expand access to tertiary education in Bauchi State and contribute to the human capital development of the region. In March 2011, the Bauchi State Government enlisted the assistance of a consultant to finalise the institution’s structure and ensure a smooth academic take-off for the 2011/2012 academic session.

The university began as a multi-campus institution with three campuses at Gadau (the main campus and administrative hub), Misau, and Bauchi (Yuli). A fourth campus at Jama’are was later established to house the Faculty of Agriculture, but was subsequently taken over by the Federal College of Education, Yola, and the Faculty of Agriculture was relocated to the main campus in Gadau.

The institution has had two substantive Vice-Chancellors — Professor Ezeldeen Abdulrahman and Professor Auwal Uba — and an interim administration before the current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Fatimah Tahir, assumed office. In January 2026, Sa’adu Zungur University matriculated 4,024 new students for the 2025/2026 academic session, reflecting the institution’s continued growth. The university’s motto, Illimi Tushen Cigaba (Knowledge is the Foundation of Development), underscores its commitment to learning and community impact.

University of Medical Sciences UNIMED
University of Medical Sciences – UNIMED

The University of Medical Sciences, Ondo widely known as UNIMED  is a state-owned specialised university located in Ondo City, Ondo State, South-West Nigeria. Established in 2015, UNIMED holds the historic distinction of being Nigeria’s first specialised medical university to be accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC), and is only the third specialised medical university in Africa. With a singular focus on health sciences, medicine, and allied medical disciplines, UNIMED offers 26 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across 13 faculties and schools, making it the Nigerian university with the largest collection of health and medical courses. It has been ranked the 3rd best specialised institution in Nigeria, the 4th best state-owned university in Nigeria, and the 19th best overall university in Nigeria by NUC rankings.

History of the Institution

The establishment of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, was the direct result of a bill proposed by the Ondo State House of Assembly under Schedule 1, Section 5(2), and Article 39(1) of Ondo State Laws, and signed into law in 2014 by Olusegun Mimiko, the Executive Governor of Ondo State at the time. The bill was passed with the vision of creating a world-class university dedicated exclusively to medical and health sciences education and research in Nigeria.

The NUC gave its approval for the establishment of the university in early 2015. The university’s pioneer and first substantive Vice-Chancellor, Professor Friday Okonofua — a distinguished Nigerian professor of gynaecology and the founder of Women Health and Action Research Centre, a non-profit charitable organisation focused on female reproductive health research — was appointed on 11th March 2015. Academic activities commenced in the 2016/2017 academic session, making UNIMED one of the youngest universities in Nigeria.

Despite its young age, UNIMED has distinguished itself rapidly through academic excellence and research innovation. In 2021, the university was ranked as the third best specialised institution and fourth best state-owned university in Nigeria by the NUC. UNIMED recently inducted 72 doctors into the medical and dental professions at one of its convocation ceremonies — a milestone reflecting its growth as a full clinical training institution. The university’s Teaching Hospital, the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), plays a central role in clinical training. UNIMED also has its own university radio station and anthem, fostering a strong sense of community.

The university operates across three campuses: the Main Campus (Odosida Campus), the Akure Campus, and the Laje Campus, each managed by a dedicated directorate. UNIMED also offers Pre-Degree, Inter-University Transfer, Conversion (UPDP), and Distance Short Training Courses for non-traditional learners.
