History of the Institution
The Nigerian Navy College of Health Sciences traces its roots to 1982 when the Nigerian Navy conceived the idea of establishing a local institution to train healthcare support personnel for the Navy Medical Services. Before then, many medical ratings were trained abroad at significant cost to the nation.
The institution was officially established in 1984 as the Nigerian Navy Medical Staff Training School (MSTS) located within NNS QUORRA, Apapa, Lagos. Over the years, the school trained hundreds of healthcare personnel who served within the Nigerian Navy and other healthcare establishments.
In 2004, plans commenced to relocate the institution to Offa, Kwara State, to provide a larger campus and facilitate future expansion. The relocation received approval from the Navy Board in 2005, and the institution was redesignated as the Nigerian Navy School of Health Sciences (NNSHS), Offa. The new campus was commissioned on 26 May 2007 by the then Honourable Minister of Defence, Chief Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi.
In 2021, the Nigerian Navy Headquarters approved a change of nomenclature from Nigerian Navy School of Health Sciences (NNSHS) to Nigerian Navy College of Health Sciences (NNCHS), reflecting its expanded academic status, professional accreditations, and growing role in healthcare manpower development within the Armed Forces and Nigeria generally. The college has reportedly trained over 1,000 healthcare personnel since inception.
