Akwa Ibom State University popularly known as AKSU  is a state-owned university located in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, with major campuses at Ikot Akpaden (Mkpat Enin LGA) and Obio Akpa (Oruk Anam LGA). Established in 2009, the university was created by the Akwa Ibom State Government to expand access to quality higher education and drive research, innovation, and manpower development.

AKSU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, continuing education, and basic studies programmes across sciences, engineering, arts, agriculture, education, management, and social sciences. The university is known for a peaceful learning environment and growing academic reputation.

History of the Institution

Akwa Ibom State University was established in 2009 by the Akwa Ibom State Government as a strategic institution to provide world-class education and produce graduates equipped for leadership and entrepreneurship.

Since inception, AKSU has expanded rapidly in staff strength, student population, programmes, and infrastructure. The university attracted experienced academics, including professors and scholars trained in British, Canadian, and American universities.

AKSU inherited and developed important agricultural assets such as the Obio Akpa Farms, strengthening its agriculture and research base. The university has continued to launch new faculties and programmes, including the recently approved Faculty of Law.

AKSU Bans Sign-Out Activities and Rowdy Celebrations After Exams

Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU) has banned sign-out activities and other forms of rowdy celebrations by students after the completion of examinations. The directive was issued by the university’s Directorate of Students’ Affairs in a notice dated 18 September 2026 and addressed to the student community.

According to the notice, activities such as loud music, bonfires, car convoys, vandalism, cult-related displays, rough driving and other disruptive engagements within the campus are prohibited. The university stated that the decision was taken to protect students and staff, prevent injuries and maintain peace and discipline within the university environment.

However, AKSU noted that moderate celebrations such as group photographs and sign-on endorsements may be allowed, provided they are conducted responsibly and without disrupting campus activities. Students, departments, associations or groups involved in prohibited activities may face disciplinary action.

The university has directed campus security and relevant security agencies to enforce the policy and take action against violators where necessary. Heads of departments have also been advised to guide students on the directive. The notice was signed by Dr. Stephen Umoh, Deputy Dean, Students’ Affairs, AKSU, on behalf of the Dean.
