The institution is fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) . History of the Institution

Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic was established by the Rivers State Government on 13 May 1988 to provide instruction and research in applied science, technology, commerce, and business management . The Military Governor, Anthony Ukpo, inaugurated the provisional council, and his successor, Group Captain Ernest Adeleye, signed the edict establishing the polytechnic on 28 March 1989. The formal ceremony of the institution took place on 19 May 1990 in Bori, the traditional headquarters of the Ogoni people .

In 2007, Senator Lee Ledogo Maeba obtained approval in principle from the Federal Government to upgrade the polytechnic to a Federal institution, but the Rivers State Government did not follow up on the opportunity at that time .

On 9 July 2015, the Rivers State Government announced the renaming of Rivers State Polytechnic to Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic in honour of the late environmental activist and writer, Ken Saro-Wiwa .

In August 2009, the acting provost spoke about the problem of cultism among students and described the decisive actions the polytechnic was taking to combat it . In November 2009, Governor Rotimi Amaechi stated that educational institutes including the polytechnic would assist in ensuring the success of environmental clean-up programs in the region .
