The successes of ICTBS, London, and three other factors informed the decision to set up a similar but bigger tertiary institution in Nigeria :

  • The Proprietor’s concern for the plight of millions of qualified young Nigerians unable to secure admission to tertiary institutions

  • The desire to expose Nigerians to quality education along British standards

  • The proprietor’s rewarding experience in teaching and researching in Nigeria’s first-generation polytechnics

Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka  widely known as FCET Akoka, FCE (T) Akoka, or Federal College of Education Akoka  is a Federal Government-owned technical teacher training institution located in Akoka, Yaba, Lagos State, Nigeria. Established in 1967 as the National Technical Teachers College (NTTC), the institution was created to produce qualified technical, vocational, and commercial educators for Nigeria’s growing educational and industrial sectors. It is regarded as the first Technical Teacher Education institution in Nigeria. The college later became the Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka in 1982 following the expansion of its curriculum and academic programmes. FCET Akoka offers NCE, Degree, PDE, Sandwich, and professional programmes and is affiliated with the University of Benin and Federal University of Technology, Minna for Degree programmes. The institution’s motto is “Knowledge, Skill and Service.”

History of the Institution

Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka was founded in 1967 as the National Technical Teachers College (NTTC), Akoka, shortly after the termination of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Special Fund Project for training technical and vocational educators in Nigeria. The need for a specialised technical teacher training institution had earlier been identified in the 1964 “Gailers’ Report” titled A National Plan for the Development of Technical Education in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Federal Government established NTTC Akoka to train professional teachers in technical, vocational, and commercial disciplines. Initially, the college offered one-year teacher training programmes for candidates with technical and commercial qualifications. In 1968 and 1970 respectively, the institution introduced NCE Technical Education and NCE Business Education programmes for secondary school leavers.

In 1982, the institution officially changed its name from National Technical Teachers College to Federal College of Education (Technical), Akoka due to the expansion of its academic curriculum and programme offerings. The institution became a fully autonomous academic institution in 1986 under the Federal Colleges of Education Decree No. 4 of 1986, later amended in 1993.

At inception, the college received substantial support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNESCO through technical assistance, equipment, machinery, and foreign experts. The college eventually moved permanently to its current campus along St. Finbarr’s College Road, Akoka in 1975 after initially operating temporarily within the campuses of Yaba College of Technology and Yaba Trade Centre.

Today, FCET Akoka remains one of Nigeria’s leading specialised institutions for Science, Technical, Vocational, and Commercial teacher education.
