This assessment encompassed existing facilities, structures, and manpower.

At the time of the NMCN assessment, the hospital had already established and was running Post Basic Accident and Emergency Nursing and Post Basic Perioperative Nursing programmes . The college is based in Yaba, a vibrant area in Lagos State known for its concentration of educational and medical institutions. Its location in Lagos gives NACON students access to a broad range of clinical training settings across Lagos’s large network of public and private hospitals.

History of the Institution

The Nigerian Navy College of Health Sciences traces its roots to 1982 when the Nigerian Navy conceived the idea of establishing a local institution to train healthcare support personnel for the Navy Medical Services. Before then, many medical ratings were trained abroad at significant cost to the nation.

The institution was officially established in 1984 as the Nigerian Navy Medical Staff Training School (MSTS) located within NNS QUORRA, Apapa, Lagos. Over the years, the school trained hundreds of healthcare personnel who served within the Nigerian Navy and other healthcare establishments.

In 2004, plans commenced to relocate the institution to Offa, Kwara State, to provide a larger campus and facilitate future expansion. The relocation received approval from the Navy Board in 2005, and the institution was redesignated as the Nigerian Navy School of Health Sciences (NNSHS), Offa. The new campus was commissioned on 26 May 2007 by the then Honourable Minister of Defence, Chief Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi.

In 2021, the Nigerian Navy Headquarters approved a change of nomenclature from Nigerian Navy School of Health Sciences (NNSHS) to Nigerian Navy College of Health Sciences (NNCHS), reflecting its expanded academic status, professional accreditations, and growing role in healthcare manpower development within the Armed Forces and Nigeria generally. The college has reportedly trained over 1,000 healthcare personnel since inception.

Nasarawa State College of Nursing Sciences Lafia - NASCNS
Nasarawa State College of Nursing Sciences, Lafia – NASCNS

Nasarawa State College of Nursing Sciences, Lafia  widely known as NASCNS  is a state government-owned nursing college located in Lafia, Nasarawa State, North-Central Nigeria. The institution was formerly known as the School of Nursing, Lafia, before being upgraded to a College of Nursing Sciences . In August 2021, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly passed a bill establishing the Nasarawa State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Lafia, providing a legal framework for training nursing and midwifery manpower to the highest standard .

The college has gained national recognition for academic excellence. In 2024, a student of the College of Nursing Sciences, Lafia, Kingsley Kelechi Onoche, emerged as the overall best student in the national Nursing Council Examination, a feat described by the state Deputy Governor as monumental . The Nasarawa State Government has applauded the management of the college, led by the Provost, Mr. Zari Solomon, for repositioning the school to compete favourably with others across the country .

Please check the school website or latest news below for the most current information about the college’s leadership and recent developments.

History of the Institution

The Nasarawa State College of Nursing Sciences, Lafia, traces its origins to the School of Nursing, Lafia, which operated under the Nasarawa State Ministry of Health . The school provided basic nursing education to aspiring nurses for many years before the state government initiated the process of upgrading it to a college of nursing and midwifery.

In March 2021, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly supported the move to upgrade the School of Nursing, Lafia, to a College of Nursing and Midwifery . The Principal of the school at the time, Mr. Zari Solomon, called for the upgrading of the institution to college status, and the House Committee on Health pledged its support .

In August 2021, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly passed a Bill for a Law for the Establishment of the Nasarawa State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Lafia . The bill scaled third reading, and the Speaker directed the Clerk to produce a clean copy for the governor’s assent. The new college was designed to:

  • Train needed nursing and midwifery manpower to the highest standard

  • Promote, through teaching and research, the advancement of knowledge

  • Organise in-service vocational courses for serving nurses, midwives, and other medical personnel

The college has since been operating as a state-of-the-art institution producing high-quality nursing professionals. In October 2024, the Nasarawa State Deputy Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, commended the management of the College of Nursing Sciences, Lafia, for repositioning the school to compete favourably with others across the country, following the outstanding performance of a student who emerged as the overall best in the national Nursing Council Examination .

Lagos University Teaching Hospital School of Nursing, Lagos
LUTH College of Nursing Sciences

Lagos University Teaching Hospital School of Nursing also known as the LUTH College of Nursing Sciences (CONS)  is a federal government-owned nursing college located within the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos State, South-West Nigeria. LUTH was founded in 1962 as a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and serves as the principal teaching hospital for the University of Lagos. The nursing school is an integral part of LUTH, which today is the largest teaching hospital in Nigeria with 800 beds and a centre of excellence in multiple medical specialities.

The College of Nursing Sciences is fully accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and offers both the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in Nursing, as well as a General Nursing programme and various Post Basic Nursing specialisations. On average, LUTH graduates about 500 students every year across its eight schools, including nursing and midwifery. The institution is dedicated to producing competent, skilled, and compassionate nursing professionals equipped to meet healthcare needs at local, national, and global levels.

Please check the school website or latest news below for the most current information about the college’s leadership, current Principal, and recent developments.

History of the Institution

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) was established following a Cabinet decision made in April 1961 based on recommendations from the Sir Eric Ashby Commission on Post-Secondary Education in Nigeria. The Cabinet Committee included notable figures such as Mr. Aja Nwachuckwu (Minister of Education), Dr. T.O.E. Elias (Attorney-General), Alhaji Shehu Shagari (Minister of Establishments), and Senator (Dr) M.A. Majekodunmi (Minister of Health).

The site now occupied by LUTH and the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos (CMUL) was a 92-acre field of farmland, formally occupied by the Mainland Hospital. The completed buildings of the new Surulere Mainland Hospital were adapted to suit the needs of a Teaching Hospital and Medical School Complex.

Over the years, LUTH has remained one of the best teaching and specialist hospitals in Nigeria. It was designated a centre of excellence in Dentistry and achieved a major breakthrough with the successful conception and delivery of the first authentic test-tube baby (In-Vitro Fertilisation) performed by Professor Osato Frank Giwa-Osagie and Professor Oladapo Ashiru at LUTH.

LUTH has also pioneered Small Incision Cataract Excision Surgery in Nigeria and has trained over 40 doctors from all over the country in the procedure. The hospital has also commenced laparoscopic general and gynaecologic surgery, which has dramatically reduced the duration of hospitalisation after surgery.

From a humble beginning of 330 beds, LUTH today is the largest teaching hospital in Nigeria with 800 beds. The hospital has produced thousands of Nurses, Laboratory Scientists, Health Records Officers, Biomedical Engineers, and other para-medical cadres. Various members of the Consultant staff have made significant contributions to the advancement of knowledge in major areas of medical science, notably in the separation of conjoined twins and in-vitro fertilisation.

LUTH is also home to the multi-million dollar NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre (NLCC), the first of its kind in West Africa, as well as the Isaac Olusola Dada Dialysis Centre & Renal Institute, the biggest Renal Institute in Nigeria. LUTH is the only Federal Teaching Hospital with an Independent Power Project that generates its own electricity and has been enjoying uninterrupted power supply since December 2017.

The nursing school within LUTH has grown over the years to become a College of Nursing Sciences, offering ND/HND programmes, General Nursing, and Post Basic Nursing specialisations. The institution produces hundreds of nursing graduates annually who serve in healthcare facilities across Nigeria and beyond.
