Bowen University, Iwo known as BUI is a private Baptist Christian university located in Iwo, South-West Nigeria. Established by the Nigerian Baptist Convention and licensed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on 17 July 2001, Bowen University is recognised as the first Baptist university in Nigeria and Africa. The university was named after Thomas Jefferson Bowen, the American missionary who pioneered Baptist missionary work in Nigeria in the 1850s. Bowen University offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across colleges including Agriculture, Health Sciences, Law, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Liberal Studies, Computing and Communication Studies, and Social and Management Sciences. History of the Institution
Bowen University traces its roots to Baptist missionary educational activities dating back to 1854 when the family of Reverend Thomas Jefferson Bowen established a school in Ijaiye-Orile, present-day Oyo State. Over the decades, Baptist educational institutions expanded rapidly across Nigeria, eventually leading to the vision of establishing a Baptist university.
The idea of a Baptist university in Nigeria was first conceived in 1938 and was revisited during meetings of the Baptist Mission of Nigeria and the Nigerian Baptist Convention in 1956 and 1957. The vision later materialised when the Federal Government of Nigeria approved the establishment of Bowen University on 17 July 2001.
Academic activities officially commenced on 4 November 2002 with 506 pioneer students admitted into the Faculties of Agriculture, Science and Science Education, and Social and Management Sciences.
The university later expanded significantly with the introduction of programmes in Medicine and Surgery, Law, Engineering, Nursing Science, Physiotherapy, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, and Environmental Sciences. Bowen University has since transitioned into a collegiate academic structure and remains one of Nigeria’s leading private universities.

Admission Requirements
UTME (Undergraduate) Admission
Candidates seeking admission into Bowen University must possess:
- A minimum of five (5) O’Level credit passes including English Language and Mathematics
- Results obtained in WAEC, NECO, GCE, or NABTEB in not more than two sittings
- A valid JAMB UTME score meeting Bowen University’s cut-off mark
- Relevant JAMB subject combinations for the chosen course
- Participation in the university screening exercise
Candidates are also expected to upload their O’Level results on JAMB CAPS.
BUTH SHIM Health Information Technician Admission 2026/2027
Bowen University Teaching Hospital (BUTH) School of Health Information Management (SHIM) has commenced admission into its Health Information Technician programme for the 2026/2027 academic session.
Applicants must be at least 16 years old and have five O’Level credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. The required subjects can be obtained in a maximum of two sittings.
The application fee is ₦10,000, which is non-refundable. Applications should be completed through the official SHIM application portal on or before Sunday, 18 October 2026.
