History of the Institution

The establishment of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, is rooted in the Osun State Government’s vision to create a technical education institution that would serve the growing population of the newly created state. Osun State was carved out of the old Oyo State in August 1991, and later that same year, the polytechnic was established by the state government. The institution began with a temporary take-off site in Iree, a historic town known for its educational legacy, while permanent structures were developed over time.

The polytechnic started with a handful of academic programmes and a modest student population, operating from temporary facilities. Over the years, OSPOLY has expanded its academic offerings, gained full NBTE accreditation for most of its programmes, and received TETFund support for infrastructure development, staff training, library improvement, and ICT advancement. The polytechnic has faced challenges typical of state institutions, including funding constraints and occasional industrial actions, but has remained committed to its core mandate of producing middle-level manpower for the Nigerian economy. The institution now boasts permanent facilities, including lecture theatres, laboratories, workshops, an ICT center, a library, and administrative buildings. OSPOLY has built a reputation for academic excellence and is known as one of the more stable state polytechnics in South-Western Nigeria.

Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic (Abia polytechnic
Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic

Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba  formerly known as Abia State Polytechnic  is a state government-owned polytechnic located in Aba, Abia State, South-East Nigeria. Established in 1992 and formally constituted by Edict No. 8 of 1994 with retrospective effect from October 1992, the polytechnic was strategically sited at the former Girls Technical College (GTC), Aba, along the Aba-Owerri Road, near the famous Ekeyimba International Stadium. On 7th November 2024, the institution was officially renamed Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic in honour of the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu — the first Executive Governor of Abia State and a renowned Nigerian engineer, politician, and statesman. The polytechnic is fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and offers Pre-ND, ND, and HND programmes across five schools covering Business Management, Science, Engineering, Environmental Design, and Communication Technology. It also operates a second campus in Umuahia — the Abia State capital — and runs a Centre for Evening Programme and Continuing Education (CEPCE) for working professionals. The current Rector is Dr. Okoro Christopher Kalu, appointed by Governor Alex Otti in March 2024. The polytechnic’s school colours are yellow and dark red.

History of the Institution

The story of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic begins in October 1992, when the Abia State Government established the polytechnic with a mandate to provide practical, skills-based technical and vocational education to the people of Abia State and the wider South-East region. The institution was formally constituted by Edict No. 8 of 1994, which gave retrospective effect to its 1992 establishment date.

The polytechnic was sited at the premises of the former Girls Technical College (GTC) in Aba — a deliberate choice that recognised the city of Aba as Nigeria’s foremost commercial and industrial hub, particularly in the South-East. The initial intake of students enrolled in certificate programmes before the National Diploma (ND) programmes formally commenced in the 1994/1995 academic year.

From its early years, the polytechnic has grown steadily to encompass five schools, a second campus in Umuahia, and a Centre for Evening Programme and Continuing Education (CEPCE) serving working adults and business professionals in the Aba commercial corridor. In March 2024, Governor Dr. Alex Otti appointed Dr. Okoro Christopher Kalu as the new Rector, signalling a fresh phase of institutional development.

The most significant recent milestone came on 7th November 2024, when the institution was officially renamed Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, in honour of Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu — Abia State’s pioneering first Executive Governor, a petroleum engineer, academic, founder of APGA, and one of Nigeria’s most distinguished public servants, who passed away in 2021. While the renaming was recent, portal addresses and some official documents may still carry the Abia State Polytechnic name during the transition period.

Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru – NIGERPOLY

Niger State Polytechnic widely known as NIGERPOLY  is a state government-owned polytechnic located in Zungeru, the headquarters of Wushishi Local Government Area, along the Minna-Kaduna Road in Niger State, North-Central Nigeria. Established in 1991 by the Niger State Government, the polytechnic commenced academic activities shortly thereafter with the mission of providing technical and vocational education to the people of Niger State and beyond. It is fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and approved by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). Niger State Polytechnic offers National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes across several schools, including Engineering, Applied Sciences, Business, Environmental Studies, and General Studies. The polytechnic is known for its affordable tuition fees, serene learning environment, and commitment to producing skilled graduates for the Nigerian workforce. The institution operates both full-time and part-time programmes to accommodate a diverse range of students. The current Rector is Dr. Shehu Usman.

History of the Institution

The establishment of Niger State Polytechnic, Zungeru, is rooted in the Niger State Government’s vision to create a technical education institution that would serve the growing population of Niger State and its neighboring regions. The polytechnic was established in 1991, with its temporary take-off site in Zungeru, a historic town known for its role as the first capital of the Northern Nigeria Protectorate. The institution began with a handful of academic programmes and a modest student population, operating from temporary facilities while permanent structures were developed.

Over the years, the polytechnic has expanded its academic offerings, gained full NBTE accreditation for most of its programmes, and received TETFund support for infrastructure development, staff training, and library improvement. The polytechnic has also faced challenges, including occasional industrial actions by staff unions and the need for continuous infrastructure upgrades. Despite these challenges, NIGERPOLY has remained committed to its core mandate of producing middle-level manpower for the Nigerian economy. The institution now boasts a permanent campus with lecture theaters, laboratories, workshops, an ICT center, a library, and administrative buildings.

Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic
Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo – AAPOLY

Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic  widely known as AAPOLY  is an Ogun State government-owned polytechnic located in Dogbolu/Akanran-Atikori, Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, South-West Nigeria. It is officially designated as an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Polytechnic, established in 2006 in pursuance of offering technologically-based education for self-reliance. AAPOLY is fully accredited and licensed by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to offer National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in Science, Engineering, and Management. It has earned prestigious international partnerships with the Cisco Networking Academy and the Oracle Academy — programmes that transform lives with hands-on digital skills training and prepare students for the labour market. The polytechnic sits on the largest expanse of land of any institution in Ogun State — approximately 300 hectares — bordered by three states: Oyo, Osun, and Ondo. The current Rector is Dr. Ogunyemi Olayinka. AAPOLY’s motto is Bridging the Skill Gap.

History of the Institution

The history of Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic can be traced back to 1979, when it was established by the government of the late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo due to the yearnings of the leaders of Ijebu-Igbo for a tertiary institution in the town. However, the institution did not last beyond one and a half years.

For decades, Ijebu-Igbo — a historically significant and commercially active community in Ogun State — was without a polytechnic institution. Fortune smiled on Ijebu-Igbo in 2005 when the law re-establishing the polytechnic was passed as Edict 31 of the Ogun State House of Assembly, naming it “The Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo”.

In 2009, the Ogun State House of Assembly passed another edict — Edict 37 of 2009 — to change the name of the institution to “Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic” in honour of the late Senator Chief Abraham Aderibigbe Adesanya, a prominent son of Ijebu-Igbo, a lawyer, and a senator who represented the Ogun State community during the Second Republic in Nigeria.

Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic is an Ogun State government-owned ICT Polytechnic established in 2006, licensed and approved by the NBTE to offer ND and HND programmes in Science, Engineering and Management courses, alongside Cisco Networking Academy and Oracle Academy programmes that transform lives with hands-on digital skills training and prepare students for the labour market. The polytechnic has also won multiple awards internationally and within Nigeria, cementing its reputation as a quality technical institution in South-West Nigeria.
