NECO 2025 SSCE External Results Statistics: 71.63% Pass Rate

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External, recording an overall pass rate of 71.63 per cent.

NECO’s Registrar and Chief Executive, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim-Wushishi, announced the release at a press briefing held at the Council’s headquarters in Minna.

Examination Timeline And Result Release

Prof. Ibrahim-Wushishi said the 2025 SSCE External examination was conducted from 26 November 2025 to 13 December 2025, while marking took place between 5 January 2026 and 21 January 2026.

According to him, the results were released 52 days after the final written paper.

Candidate Registration And Participation Figures

NECO recorded a total of 96,979 registrations for the 2025 SSCE External examination, made up of:

  • 51,823 male candidates

  • 45,156 female candidates

Out of the registered candidates, 95,160 sat for the examination:

  • 50,785 males

  • 44,375 females

Performance In English Language And Mathematics

For English Language, 93,425 candidates sat for the paper, out of which 73,167 candidates earned credit and above.

In Mathematics, 93,330 candidates took the examination, with 85,256 candidates achieving credit and above.

Five-Credit Results Breakdown

NECO reported two key performance outcomes:

  • 68,166 candidates earned five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics

  • 82,082 candidates earned five credits and above, without the compulsory English and Mathematics combination

Purpose Of The SSCE External Examination

The Registrar explained that the SSCE External examination provides candidates with an additional opportunity to qualify for admission into universities and other tertiary institutions within and outside Nigeria.

He added that the examination covered 16 subjects and described the result release as part of NECO’s commitment to credible and reliable assessments. Examination Malpractice And Sanctions

NECO disclosed that 9,016 candidates were booked for various examination malpractice offences during the 2025 SSCE External examination. This figure represents an increase from 6,160 cases recorded in 2024.

The Council further reported that:

  • Five supervisors were recommended for blacklisting for aiding and abetting malpractice

  • Four examination centres were recommended for derecognition over whole-centre malpractice
