Obafemi Awolowo University, popularly known as OAU, is a federal university located in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. The university was originally established in 1961 as the University of Ife by the government of Western Nigeria under the leadership of Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, and academic activities began in October 1962.

The institution was later renamed in 1987 in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the first Premier of the Western Region of Nigeria, who had envisioned the creation of a world-class university in the region.

Over the years, OAU has developed into one of Nigeria’s most prestigious universities, known for its strong academic standards, research contributions, and beautiful campus environment.
