Obafemi Awolowo University, popularly known as OAU, is a federal university located in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. The university was originally established in 1961 as the University of Ife by the government of Western Nigeria under the leadership of Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, and academic activities began in October 1962.

The institution was later renamed in 1987 in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the first Premier of the Western Region of Nigeria, who had envisioned the creation of a world-class university in the region.

Over the years, OAU has developed into one of Nigeria’s most prestigious universities, known for its strong academic standards, research contributions, and beautiful campus environment. The university has expanded from its original five faculties to numerous faculties, institutes, and research centres serving thousands of students across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Admission Requirements

Undergraduate Admission

• Candidates must sit for the UTME conducted by JAMB.

• Applicants must obtain at least five O’Level credits including English Language and Mathematics in relevant subjects.

• Candidates must choose Obafemi Awolowo University as their preferred institution during UTME registration.

Scholarships 

OAU ASUU 2026 Scholarship Award for Indigent Students

Applications are now open for the 2026 ASUU Scholarship Award at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). The scholarship is available to registered OAU students who are indigent and have a CGPA of 3.0 or above. Eligible students are required to submit an application letter together with the specified supporting documents.

Applicants must prepare an application letter of not more than two pages, stating their name, course of study, year of study, state of origin, email address and phone number. The letter should be accompanied by a photocopy of the current OAU student identity card, a letter from the Head of Department confirming the applicant’s CGPA or academic transcript for the preceding session, the current semester registration form and two recent passport photographs.

Completed applications must be submitted in person to the Administrative Secretary, Mrs Asunde, at the ASUU OAU Secretariat, opposite the Centre for Gender and Social Policy Studies. For enquiries, applicants can contact the Administrative Secretary on 08034455115. The application deadline is 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, and students should ensure that all required documents are submitted before the closing time.
