Obafemi Awolowo University, popularly known as OAU, is a federal university located in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. The university was originally established in 1961 as the University of Ife by the government of Western Nigeria under the leadership of Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, and academic activities began in October 1962.

The institution was later renamed in 1987 in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the first Premier of the Western Region of Nigeria, who had envisioned the creation of a world-class university in the region.

OAU Hostel Accommodation Balloting for Returning Students 2025/2026 and 2026/2027

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, through its Division of Student Affairs, has announced the date and time for the hostel accommodation balloting exercise for interested returning undergraduate students for the 2025/2026 and 2026/2027 academic sessions.

The balloting exercise is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, at 6:00 p.m. All eligible returning undergraduate students seeking on-campus accommodation are expected to participate in the exercise.

The university has advised interested students to take note of the scheduled date and time and make the necessary preparations to participate in the balloting.

Returning undergraduate students are encouraged to follow any further instructions issued by the Division of Student Affairs regarding the hostel accommodation process.

Scholarships 

OAU ASUU 2026 Scholarship Award for Indigent Students

Applications are now open for the 2026 ASUU Scholarship Award at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). The scholarship is available to registered OAU students who are indigent and have a CGPA of 3.0 or above. Eligible students are required to submit an application letter together with the specified supporting documents.

Applicants must prepare an application letter of not more than two pages, stating their name, course of study, year of study, state of origin, email address and phone number. The letter should be accompanied by a photocopy of the current OAU student identity card, a letter from the Head of Department confirming the applicant’s CGPA or academic transcript for the preceding session, the current semester registration form and two recent passport photographs.

Completed applications must be submitted in person to the Administrative Secretary, Mrs Asunde, at the ASUU OAU Secretariat, opposite the Centre for Gender and Social Policy Studies. OAU Issues Further Notice on Hostel Accommodation Balloting for Returning Students

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has issued a further notice to returning students regarding the bedspace balloting exercise scheduled for Tuesday, 27 October 2026. The university’s Division of Student Affairs said it had received numerous enquiries from students concerning the exercise.

The Division confirmed that the university’s e-portal experienced congestion approximately one hour before the scheduled commencement of the balloting. However, it stated that reports alleging that some students conducted the exercise through an application other than the university’s official e-portal were unfamiliar to the Division.

According to the notice, the allegation is currently under investigation. The Division assured students that it remains committed to ensuring a fair and credible bedspace allocation process for returning students.

Students have been advised to remain calm, disregard unverified information and await further official communication from the Division of Student Affairs. The university stated that additional information and necessary updates would be communicated in due course.

OAU Emerges Overall Champion of WAUG 2026

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has emerged overall champion of the 2026 West African Universities Games (WAUG), held from 2 to 12 October 2026. The host institution finished at the top of the medal table with 122 medals, comprising 33 gold, 50 silver and 39 bronze.

The University of Ghana finished second with 59 medals, including 26 gold, 21 silver and 12 bronze, while Benson Idahosa University came third with 38 medals. The University of Ibadan placed fourth with 42 medals, followed by Lagos State University with 17 medals. Other participating institutions included Afe Babalola University, Delta State University, the University of Ilorin and the University of Cape Coast.

The final medal table featured 23 universities. OAU led the standings, while the University of Ghana recorded the second-highest number of gold medals. Benson Idahosa University secured 21 gold medals, and the University of Ibadan won 17 gold medals. The results reflected the performances of participating institutions across the sporting events.

The Games were hosted by OAU in Ile-Ife and brought together universities from across West Africa. According to the organisers’ account, 50 universities featured at the event, with more than 1,500 athletes and officials expected to participate across 18 sports. The competition provided a platform for student-athletes to demonstrate their abilities, interact with peers and represent their institutions.

OAU Announces 431st Inaugural Lecture

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has announced its 431st Inaugural Lecture, titled “Endocrine Disruptors Everywhere: How Safe Is Our Environment?” The lecture will focus on issues surrounding endocrine-disrupting substances and environmental safety.

The lecture will be delivered by Professor Aderemi Okunola Ogunfowokan, a Professor of Analytical and Environmental Chemistry. He holds BSc, MSc and PhD qualifications and is a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (FCSN).

The event is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. prompt at Oduduwa Hall, OAU, Ile-Ife. The lecture will be chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire.
