Nigerian British University - NBU
Nigerian British University – NBU

Nigerian British University  widely known as NBU  is a private co-educational university located at Kilometre 10, Port Harcourt/Aba Expressway, Asa, Abia State, South-East Nigeria. Approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in April 2022 under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, NBU was established by the Adorable Foundation for Educational Development (AFED) — the proprietors of the Adorable British Schools — with a mandate to deliver global, British-standard education through the development of technology in teaching and learning, while reducing Nigeria’s educational migration to the United Kingdom. The university was commissioned by Okezie Ikpeazu, the then Governor of Abia State, in February 2023, who also awarded scholarships to the first 20 students of the institution. NBU currently operates 5 faculties and has 24 NUC-accredited programmes following a successful NUC Resource Verification exercise. NBU does not conduct Post-UTME examinations. The current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi. NBU’s motto is Developing Potential We Trust.

History of the Institution

The founding story of Nigerian British University is rooted in the educational vision of the Adorable Foundation for Educational Development (AFED). The Foundation began its educational journey by establishing the Adorable British School in Awka, Anambra State — a creche, nursery, and primary school that implements the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) alongside the Nigerian Primary Curriculum, a comprehensive, thematic, and creative curriculum adapted to children’s interests and level of understanding.

In furtherance of this educational philosophy, the proprietors established the Adorable British College in Enugu — a British secondary school operating a hybrid curriculum of the Nigerian National Curriculum and the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC), a curriculum used in approximately 103 schools across 50 countries worldwide. The Adorable British School further earned a Compliance Status award from the Council of British International Schools (COBIS), a British educational institution providing quality assurance in member schools through its Patron’s Accreditation and Compliance process. This achievement — which facilitates professional networking with British international schools globally — is what the proprietors seek to replicate at Nigerian British University.

NBU was approved by the NUC in April 2022 and formally commenced academic activities. At its 2nd Matriculation Ceremony in March 2025, Vice-Chancellor Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi announced that 24 programmes had been NUC-accredited — 16 at take-off, and an additional 8 following a successful NUC Resource Verification exercise in June 2024. Of these 24 programmes, 23 were actively admitting students, with 162 fresh students matriculated for the 2024/2025 session across 5 faculties. The Abia State Governor Alex Otti reiterated the state government’s support, noting that 20% of the state’s ₦700 billion annual budget had been allocated to education. NBU’s vision is to become a world-class private university providing globally competitive education within Nigeria.
