History of the Institution
The Gombe State College of Education, Billiri, was established in 2012 during the regime of Governor Dr. Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo . The college was created as part of the state government’s strategy to address education imbalance between Gombe State and other states in Nigeria, and to provide increased access to tertiary education for the growing number of candidates seeking admission .
The first phase of the college building, costing N2 billion, comprised an administrative block and 27 classrooms, along with staff quarters . The National Council of Colleges of Education gave approval for the commencement of academic activities, and the college officially began operations in 2015 with the admission of pioneer students .
At its inauguration in December 2015, Governor Dankwambo disclosed that the state government had spent N1.6 billion on the college’s permanent site and approved a monthly grant of N30 million for the college’s funding . The government also approved the purchase of two 32-seater buses and furniture worth N55 million for the college .
The college started with 498 registered students for Pre-NCE programmes . In 2019, the college secured N461.9 million from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for infrastructural development .
