Federal College of Education, Kontagora commonly known as FCE Kontagora, FCEKG, or Federal University of Education, Kontagora (following its recent upgrade)  is a Federal Government-owned teacher training institution located in Kontagora, Niger State, North-Central Nigeria. The institution was originally established in September 1978 as the Federal Advanced Teachers College (FATC) during the military administration of General Olusegun Obasanjo. It was created following the recommendations of the 1970 Sir Eric Ashby Report on teacher education in Nigeria. The institution later became the Federal College of Education, Kontagora under Federal College of Education Decree No. 4 of 1986 and subsequent amendments. The institution is known for teacher education, NCE programmes, and Degree programmes affiliated with Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. Recent developments have also seen the institution transition toward Federal University of Education status.

History of the Institution

Federal College of Education, Kontagora was established in September 1978 as the Federal Advanced Teachers College (FATC) in Kontagora, Niger State. The establishment followed the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen teacher education nationwide after the recommendations of the Sir Eric Ashby Commission Report of 1970.

Initially, the institution operated in affiliation with the University of Ilorin before becoming an autonomous institution in 1987 under the supervision of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE). Its primary mandate was to produce qualified teachers at the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) level for Nigeria’s primary and junior secondary education sectors.

Over the years, the institution expanded academically and administratively, introducing schools in Sciences, Languages, Arts and Social Sciences, Vocational Studies, and Primary/Early Childhood Education. The college also established Degree programmes in affiliation with Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

The institution is currently headed by Provost Prof. Faruk Rashid Haruna. In recent years, the Federal Government approved the upgrade of the institution to the Federal University of Education, Kontagora (FUEK), reflecting broader reforms in Nigeria’s teacher education sector.
