The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) was taken over by the Federal Government on April 1st, 1975, as the fifth teaching hospital in Nigeria, coming after Ibadan Teaching Hospital and Lagos Teaching Hospital . The hospital was established to provide tertiary healthcare services, training for medical professionals, and research in Edo State and the South-South region of Nigeria.

From humble beginnings, UBTH has grown into a center of excellence, expanding services and facilities over its more than 50 years of operation . The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) College of Nursing Sciences has opened applications for admission into its Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.N.Sc.) programme for the 2026/2027 academic session. The five-year programme is offered through the Department of Nursing Science, College of Nursing Sciences, UBTH, in affiliation with the University of Benin.
