The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) was taken over by the Federal Government on April 1st, 1975, as the fifth teaching hospital in Nigeria, coming after Ibadan Teaching Hospital and Lagos Teaching Hospital . The hospital was established to provide tertiary healthcare services, training for medical professionals, and research in Edo State and the South-South region of Nigeria.

From humble beginnings, UBTH has grown into a center of excellence, expanding services and facilities over its more than 50 years of operation . The College of Nursing (CONUBTH) was established as part of UBTH to address the critical need for qualified nurses in the region.
