Federal College of Agricultural Produce Technology – FCAPT

The Federal College of Agricultural Produce Technology (FCAPT), Kano, is a federal government-owned tertiary institution in Kano State, Nigeria. It specialises in training middle-level manpower in agricultural produce technology, food processing, storage, preservation, pest management and post-harvest handling. The college operates as the training arm of the Nigerian Stored Produce Research Institute (NSPRI), under the Federal Ministry responsible for agriculture.

FCAPT provides practical and technical education for students interested in agriculture, food production, animal health, agricultural extension and related fields. Its programmes cover different qualification levels, including National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), diploma and certificate courses. This range allows applicants to choose programmes according to their educational qualifications and career interests.

The college’s work is particularly relevant to Nigeria’s agricultural sector, where proper storage, processing and preservation of farm produce can help reduce post-harvest losses and improve food security. Students receive training in areas that support agricultural production, food quality, produce inspection and the management of agricultural resources.

History of the Institution

The Federal College of Agricultural Produce Technology began in 1975 as the School of Food Storage Technology under the Kano sub-station of the Nigerian Stored Produce Research Institute. Its initial responsibility was to train staff of produce inspection divisions in state ministries of agriculture, particularly in pest control and food chemistry.

The institution gradually expanded its training activities to cover other aspects of food storage. In 1990, its intake was extended to include staff from local government agriculture departments.

In 2003, the Federal Ministry responsible for agriculture approved the school’s upgrade to a diploma-awarding institution. It was initially known as the Federal College of Produce Inspection, Food and Stored Technology, Kano, before adopting its present name.

The college formally commenced its diploma-awarding operations in 2008 with programmes in Food Technology, Agricultural Technology, Pre-ND and Remedial Studies. It has since expanded its academic offerings to include additional programmes in agriculture, animal production, computer science, food technology and related areas.
