Wesley University

Wesley University, Ondo also known as WUO  is a private Christian university located in Ondo City, Ondo State, South-West Nigeria. Granted a licence to operate by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2007, the university was established by the Methodist Church of Nigeria and derives its name from John Wesley (1703 — 1791), the founder of the Methodist Church worldwide. Originally named Wesley University of Science and Technology (WUSTO) at inception, it was later renamed to encompass all academic disciplines. With over 10,000 undergraduates, more than 1,000 postgraduate students, 12 colleges, and over 32 departments, Wesley University has grown into one of the most comprehensive private universities in South-West Nigeria. In November 2025, the university made history by announcing a 50% reduction in tuition fees for most programmes — a landmark decision aimed at easing the financial burden on students and parents. The current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Samuel Obeka. The university offers a consistently strike-free academic calendar, making it a highly attractive choice for students who value academic stability.

History of the Institution

The story of Wesley University, Ondo is rooted in the centuries-old legacy of the Methodist Church and its commitment to education in Nigeria. John Wesley (1703 — 1791), his brother Charles Wesley (1707 — 1788), George Whitefield (1714 — 1770), and others, as young men at the University of Oxford, formed a movement called the Holy Club. Through the activities of this movement, there was a religious revival that caused social and national life to improve as people’s consciences became more active in doing what was right according to the Bible. It is this same spirit of intellectual and moral transformation that underpins the founding philosophy of Wesley University.

The university was granted its NUC operational licence in 2007 and began as Wesley University of Science and Technology (WUSTO). In the years since its founding, it has expanded significantly — from a science-focused institution into a comprehensive multi-college university offering programmes across health sciences, law, engineering, agriculture, arts, education, social sciences, environmental design, and pharmacy. The university received NUC approval for new academic programmes that triggered an unprecedented rise in student enrolment, cementing its reputation as a fast-growing institution.

A defining moment in the university’s recent history came on 23rd November 2025, at the 14th Convocation ceremony, when Vice-Chancellor Professor Samuel Obeka announced a 50% reduction in tuition fees for most undergraduate programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session, excluding Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, Law, and select Medical and Allied Health Sciences. This decision was described as being in response to prevailing economic challenges and in line with Wesley University’s commitment to affordable, accessible, and inclusive education. The university has also distinguished itself academically — notably producing 19-year-old first class graduate Miss Ifeoluwa Mercy Adeyemi, who graduated in Microbiology with a CGPA of 4.97 out of 5.0, and producing a total of 38 first class graduates in a single convocation.
