History of the Institution
The history of St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital College of Nursing Sciences is closely connected to the growth and expansion of St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital, Onitsha.
The hospital itself was founded on 15th May 1965 by Archbishop Charles Heerey of blessed memory under the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha. The vision was to establish a modern specialist hospital capable of providing comprehensive healthcare services to the growing population of Onitsha and surrounding communities. Over the decades, the hospital developed into one of the largest private specialist healthcare institutions in Nigeria and became a major referral centre in Southeastern Nigeria.
As the shortage of nursing manpower increased nationwide, especially due to the migration of healthcare professionals abroad, the Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Maduka Okeke, conceived the idea of establishing a nursing school within the hospital. The project received support from the Anambra State Government under Governor Peter Obi. On 19th December 2012, the project site for the nursing school was blessed, while the foundation stone was laid as part of the development process.
On 9th May 2015, during the Golden Jubilee celebration of St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital, the College of Nursing complex was officially blessed and commissioned. A major breakthrough occurred on 14th November 2017 following an accreditation visit by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. During the accreditation exercise, approval was granted for student admission, and the institution’s status was elevated from a School of Nursing to a College of Nursing Sciences, making it the first College of Nursing in Anambra State.
Academic activities officially commenced on 18th December 2017 when the pioneer student nurses resumed studies. In December 2019, the college received Full Accreditation Status from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, and its admission quota increased from 50 to 100 students annually. The pioneer set later achieved a 100% pass rate in the Nursing Council Final Qualifying Examination. Since then, the college has maintained a strong reputation for academic excellence and professional nursing education.
