Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba formerly known as Abia State Polytechnic is a state government-owned polytechnic located in Aba, Abia State, South-East Nigeria. Established in 1992 and formally constituted by Edict No. 8 of 1994 with retrospective effect from October 1992, the polytechnic was strategically sited at the former Girls Technical College (GTC), Aba, along the Aba-Owerri Road, near the famous Ekeyimba International Stadium. On 7th November 2024, the institution was officially renamed Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic in honour of the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu — the first Executive Governor of Abia State and a renowned Nigerian engineer, politician, and statesman. History of the Institution
The story of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic begins in October 1992, when the Abia State Government established the polytechnic with a mandate to provide practical, skills-based technical and vocational education to the people of Abia State and the wider South-East region. The institution was formally constituted by Edict No. 8 of 1994, which gave retrospective effect to its 1992 establishment date.
The polytechnic was sited at the premises of the former Girls Technical College (GTC) in Aba — a deliberate choice that recognised the city of Aba as Nigeria’s foremost commercial and industrial hub, particularly in the South-East. Admission Requirements
ND (National Diploma) — Morning (Full-Time) Admission
- A minimum of four (4) passes in SSCE/NECO, GCE O’Level, NABTEB, or equivalent, obtained in one or two sittings, including English Language and Mathematics, plus two other relevant subjects.
- Science and Technology programmes require credit passes in both Mathematics and English Language. Note: Literature in English is NOT accepted as a substitute for English Language.
- Business and Management programmes require credit passes in English Language and Mathematics.
- A valid JAMB UTME score is required for full-time ND admission. Candidates must upload their O’Level results on the JAMB website.
- Candidates should apply via the official polytechnic portal and generate an invoice for the application form fee (₦9,000, excluding bank charges).
ND (National Diploma) — Evening (Part-Time) Admission via CEPCE
- Suitable for working professionals. JAMB UTME may not be required for evening ND programmes.
- Similar O’Level entry requirements apply.
HND (Higher National Diploma) Admission
- A relevant ND with a minimum of Lower Credit from an NBTE-accredited institution.
- A minimum of one year of post-ND industrial training (SIWES/IT) is compulsory.
