Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana (AIFPU) is a federal government-owned polytechnic located in Unwana, Afikpo North Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. Established in 1981, it is one of Nigeria’s leading federal polytechnics, offering National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes across science, technology, engineering, business, and environmental studies. The institution’s motto — “Skill for Technological Freedom” — captures its core mission of equipping graduates with practical, industry-ready competencies.

History of the Institution

Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1981, with Engr. Dr. O.B. Epelle as its pioneer Rector. The polytechnic was created to address Nigeria’s growing demand for technically skilled manpower and to advance technological self-sufficiency in the country.

Academic activities began in 1982 at a temporary site at the former Federal Government College, Okposi. The permanent site at Unwana — approximately 620 hectares of land donated by the Unwana community — was formally handed over by the late Ezeogo Dr. Akanu Ibiam, after whom the institution is named. On April 30, 1982, the foundation stone was laid by the then Vice-President of Nigeria, Dr. Alex Ekwueme.

The first set of students was admitted on May 27, 1982, with programmes in Business Administration, Secretarial Studies, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Technology, and Mechanical Engineering Technology. Over four decades later, the polytechnic has grown into a comprehensive technical institution with 27 academic departments spread across six schools, and has produced over thirty graduating sets.
