Established in 1976, the college began as a College of Education under Plateau State Edict No. 5 of 1978 before becoming part of Nasarawa State following the state’s creation in 1996 . The institution is fully accredited by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) and operates on a mission to produce qualified teachers equipped with the knowledge, skills, and character necessary for effective service in primary and secondary schools across Nigeria. The college offers full-time, sandwich, and part-time Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes, Pre-NCE, and degree programmes in affiliation with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria .

History of the Institution
Nasarawa State College of Education, Akwanga was established in 1976, making it one of the older colleges of education in Nigeria . The institution was originally established under the Plateau State Edict No. 5 of 1978 before Nasarawa State was created as a distinct state. Following the creation of Nasarawa State in 1996 under General Sani Abacha’s administration, the college became a state-owned institution under Edict No. 16 of 1996 .
From its founding, the college has focused on producing quality teachers through NCE programmes. Over its nearly five decades of operation, COEA has expanded its academic offerings, established affiliation agreements with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria for degree programmes, and developed modern infrastructure at its permanent site in Akwanga town .
