Rivers State College of Health Science and Management Technology (RIVCOHSMAT) is a public health sciences institution located in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. The college is widely recognized as one of the leading health technology institutions in the Niger Delta region and is popularly known as the “Cradle of Health Technologists, Health Scientists and Health Technicians.” It was established to train middle-level and higher-level healthcare professionals for the Nigerian healthcare system.
The institution offers certificate, diploma, National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), and professional health programmes across various schools and departments. It operates under the Rivers State Government and has produced healthcare personnel serving in hospitals, public health agencies, laboratories, and healthcare organizations across Nigeria.
History of the Institution
Rivers State College of Health Science and Management Technology was established through a bill passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly and signed into law on 17 August 2001 by the then Governor of Rivers State, Sir Dr. Peter Odili. The law brought together several existing health training institutions under one administrative structure.
Before the establishment of the college, the constituent schools operated independently:
- School of Nursing (established in 1970)
- School of Midwifery (established in 1970)
- School of Health Technology (established in 1974)
- School of Public Health Nursing (established in 1979)
The restructuring created a comprehensive health sciences institution capable of training professionals across multiple healthcare disciplines. Today, the college remains one of the largest health training institutions in Rivers State.
