History of the Institution
Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic was established shortly after the creation of Akwa Ibom State from the former Cross River State in 1987. The state government identified the need for a technology-oriented institution that would provide practical and vocational training to support industrial growth and manpower development within the state.
The institution was formally established through Akwa Ibom State Government Edict No. 11 of 1991, while the official commissioning took place on Friday, 24 January 1992. At inception, the polytechnic admitted approximately 961 students into various academic programmes supervised by the Ministry of Education. The pioneer schools included Engineering, Environmental Studies, Science, and Communication Arts.
Over the decades, the institution expanded significantly in infrastructure, student population, and programme accreditation. It introduced additional departments in Business Management, Information Technology, Environmental Sciences, and entrepreneurship studies. The polytechnic also strengthened its practical training approach through laboratory development, entrepreneurship schemes, and industrial attachment programmes.
In recent years, the institution has continued upgrading facilities and academic programmes. The Akwa Ibom State Government approved major funding interventions for accreditation and infrastructure development, while new academic programmes in Legal Studies and technology-based disciplines have also emerged. The current Acting Rector is Dr. Akanimo Edet Jonah.
