ADAMAWAPOLY
Adamawa State Polytechnic – ADAMAWAPOLY

Adamawa State Polytechnic  widely known as ADAMAWAPOLY  is a state government-owned polytechnic located in Jimeta-Yola, the capital of Adamawa State, North-East Nigeria. Established in 1991 through a merger of the College of Preliminary Studies, Yola, and the Staff Development Institute, Numan, the polytechnic was created to provide well-trained, skillful middle-level manpower that contributes effectively to the economic and social development of Adamawa State, the nation, and West Africa as a whole. The polytechnic is fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and offers Pre-ND, ND, HND, and Degree programmes across multiple schools covering engineering, business, science, environmental design, health sciences, and communication technology. ADAMAWAPOLY operates three campuses — the Jimeta-Yola Main Campus, the Jambutu Campus (also in Jimeta), and the Numan Campus in Numan LGA. In the 2021 academic session, the polytechnic was also approved to offer degree programmes in affiliation with the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), pending final NUC approval. The polytechnic’s vision is to be a standard polytechnic in Nigeria and Africa, well known for its technical, vocational, and entrepreneurial skills training development and self-reliance.

History of the Institution

The story of Adamawa State Polytechnic began in 1991, when the Adamawa State Government merged two existing institutions — the College of Preliminary Studies, Yola, and the Staff Development Institute, Numan — to create a new polytechnic that would serve the technical and vocational education needs of the state. The merger brought together the academic resources and physical infrastructure of both predecessors to establish a well-rounded polytechnic in North-East Nigeria.

At inception, the polytechnic offered National Diploma programmes in Computer Science, Statistics, Accountancy, Business Studies, and Secretarial Studies. It operated initially with a carefully structured set of schools and gradually expanded its academic offerings to include Engineering Technology, Environmental Design and Technology, and Health Sciences, among others.

In 2007, the polytechnic hired 200 staff of carefully balanced ethnic and religious composition to reflect the diversity of Adamawa State’s multi-ethnic communities. In November 2008, a government-commissioned review panel issued a critical assessment of the institution’s academic programmes — noting that only three of the 33 programmes offered had full NBTE accreditation at the time — and called for urgent reform. In December 2009, the state government authorised funding for key infrastructure improvements including a library complex, lecturers’ residence, and campus fencing. These interventions marked the beginning of a sustained period of institutional development.

By 2021, the polytechnic had been approved to begin offering degree programmes in affiliation with the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), with proposed degree courses including B.A. Mass Communication, B.A. English, B.A. Corporate Education, B.Sc. Accountancy, B.Sc. Banking and Finance, and B.Sc. Economics, subject to NUC approval. Today, the polytechnic is acknowledged within and outside Nigeria as a front-runner in technical and vocational education in North-East Nigeria.

History of the Institution

The establishment of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, is rooted in the Osun State Government’s vision to create a technical education institution that would serve the growing population of the newly created state. Osun State was carved out of the old Oyo State in August 1991, and later that same year, the polytechnic was established by the state government. The institution began with a temporary take-off site in Iree, a historic town known for its educational legacy, while permanent structures were developed over time.

The polytechnic started with a handful of academic programmes and a modest student population, operating from temporary facilities. Over the years, OSPOLY has expanded its academic offerings, gained full NBTE accreditation for most of its programmes, and received TETFund support for infrastructure development, staff training, library improvement, and ICT advancement. The polytechnic has faced challenges typical of state institutions, including funding constraints and occasional industrial actions, but has remained committed to its core mandate of producing middle-level manpower for the Nigerian economy. The institution now boasts permanent facilities, including lecture theatres, laboratories, workshops, an ICT center, a library, and administrative buildings. OSPOLY has built a reputation for academic excellence and is known as one of the more stable state polytechnics in South-Western Nigeria.
