Abia State College of Nursing Sciences, Amachara traces its roots to 1948 when the School of Nursing, ABSUTH, Aba was established by the British colonialists. The school was originally created to train qualified nurses to serve in the colonial healthcare system in Eastern Nigeria.

In 1963, following the creation of regions in Nigeria, the school became the property of the Eastern Region. The institution continued to operate under regional ownership until the creation of states in Nigeria.
