Federal Polytechnic, Nekede popularly known as FPNO or Nekede Poly is a Federal Government-owned polytechnic located in Nekede, Owerri West Local Government Area, Imo State, South-Eastern Nigeria. Founded in 1978, it is one of the oldest and most reputable polytechnics in the South-East region of Nigeria. The institution offers National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes across eight schools, covering engineering, science, technology, business, health sciences, agriculture, information technology, and environmental studies. All programmes are fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). The current Rector is Dr. (Mrs.) Basilia Igbokwe. FPNO’s motto is Knowledge and Skill for Service.
History of the Institution
Federal Polytechnic, Nekede has its roots in 1978 when it was established by the Imo State Government as the College of Technology, Owerri. The institution started on a temporary site at the premises of Government Technical College, Owerri, with an initial intake of 250 students before relocating to its present permanent site at Nekede in October 1980.
On 7th April 1993, the polytechnic was taken over by the Federal Government of Nigeria and officially renamed The Federal Polytechnic, Nekede. This transition marked a significant turning point for the institution, opening the door to greater federal funding, expanded academic programmes, and improved infrastructure.
Over the decades, FPNO has grown into one of the most dynamic polytechnics in Nigeria. In 2022, the institution acquired a second campus, a landmark development that expanded its capacity to admit more students and offer more programmes. That same year, six new academic programmes were introduced, including HND Art and Design in Ceramics, Sculpture, and Textile. The polytechnic has also distinguished itself through innovation, notably inventing a fuelless generator, and through its deployment of electronic voting in Student Union Government (SUG) elections. Rev. Engr. Dr. Michael Arimanwa served as the eighth Rector of FPNO and notably the first alumnus to hold the position, having been installed in October 2018.
