COOU Introduces “Study, Work And Earn” Initiative For Students
The management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has announced plans to integrate students into a new “Study, Work and Earn” initiative through its Business Ventures Committee (BVC).
EducationNGR gathered that the programme aims to support students who engage in small-scale trading or other activities to fund their education. According to the university, many students currently resort to hawking or informal work without proper structure, direction, or opportunities for long-term growth.
Following a series of engagements with students, the committee developed structured opportunities that allow students to earn income while continuing their academic activities.
The initiative also aligns with the vision of the Vice-Chancellor, Kate Azuka Omenugha, to promote economic sustainability and development within the university under her 3Vs Agenda.
What The Initiative Offers
According to the Business Ventures Committee, many of the opportunities under the programme are designed to be flexible and manageable for students.
One aspect of the scheme focuses on plastic and waste recycling. Students who participate will collect plastic cans and sachet-water waste until the materials reach 10kg or more, after which they will receive payment.
The university described the recycling component as a practical way for students to earn money while also contributing to environmental cleanliness on campus.
How Students Can Join The Programme
Students interested in participating in the initiative are required to follow the registration process established by the committee.
The process includes:
- Registering with the Business Ventures Committee
- Obtaining an official authorisation letter to operate within the campus environment
Registration for the programme is free.
However, the committee clarified that the authorisation allows students to promote products within their immediate lecture areas or academic environment only. It does not permit the display of products on tables or roaming sales across the campus.
Part-Time Job Opportunities For Students
The committee also revealed that it has partnered with several campus-based businesses to create part-time employment opportunities for students.

- Kenecee Foods
- Campus supermarkets
- Table-water suppliers
Students who can balance academic activities with part-time work are encouraged to submit their details so they can be contacted when suitable opportunities become available.
According to the committee, payments will follow an hourly wage structure, similar to employment systems used in countries such as the United Kingdom and other developed economies.
