History of the Institution

The University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) is a 500-bed tertiary healthcare institution located in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria . The hospital was conceived in 1994 by the Akwa Ibom State Government as the Akwa Ibom State Specialist Hospital, later renamed Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital. Clinical services started on 22nd January 1996. In 1997, it was taken over by the Federal Government and further renamed Federal Medical Centre, Uyo .

Following the establishment of a College of Health Sciences at the Federal University of Uyo, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in March 2001 between the Federal Ministry of Health, the University of Uyo, and the Hospital, making it the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. This was necessary to enable students to do their clinical training . The hospital formally became the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) on 28th January 2008 .

The College of Nursing Sciences was established as part of UUTH to address the critical need for qualified nurses in Akwa Ibom State and the South-South region of Nigeria. The college has since grown to offer ND and HND Nursing programmes, as well as Post-Basic Nursing and Midwifery programmes .
