Auchi Polytechnic is one of Nigeria’s oldest and most reputable federal polytechnics, located in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area, Edo State. Founded in 1963, it holds the distinction of being one of the first four polytechnics established in Nigeria. With over 8,000 students and more than 50 academic departments spread across ten schools, Auchi Polytechnic offers National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), Post-HND, and Degree programmes in engineering, science, technology, arts, business, and environmental studies. The institution’s motto — “Hands and Brain for Development” — reflects its long-standing commitment to producing practically skilled, self-reliant graduates.

History of the Institution

Auchi Polytechnic was founded in 1963, initially as a technical college. It was later upgraded to a full polytechnic in 1973, making it one of the pioneer tertiary technical institutions in Nigeria. The polytechnic was established to produce well-trained, highly skilled middle-level manpower for the national economy across engineering technology, sciences, environmental studies, management studies, and arts and design.

Over the decades, the institution has steadily expanded its academic scope, introducing entrepreneurial courses across most programmes to prepare graduates for self-employment and job creation. It has also embraced digital learning through its TERAS Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS) and has established a dedicated Online Distance Flexible e-Learning (ODFeL) platform for remote learners.

The current Rector is Dr. S. S. Umar, who has been in office since 2022.

Auchi Polytechnic Seeks UNIZIK Approval to Expand Affiliated Degree Programmes

The Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, has asked Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, to expand the degree programmes available under their existing academic affiliation. The request was presented during a visit by an Auchi Polytechnic delegation to UNIZIK Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, on Thursday, October 15, 2026.

According to Auchi Polytechnic’s Director of Academic Planning, Dr Augustine E. Ainabor, the affiliation began in 2013. The current arrangement covers Accounting, Business Administration and Estate Management. The polytechnic is seeking to introduce additional degree options in Engineering, Public Administration and Local Government Administration, among other fields, to broaden opportunities for its students.

A member of Auchi Polytechnic’s Governing Council, Okwilague Abdulai, who represented the Rector, described the two institutions as longstanding partners and appealed to UNIZIK to include the polytechnic in its academic expansion plans. Professor Anyaehie welcomed the proposal and directed UNIZIK’s Director of Academic Planning and Registrar to guide the visiting delegation through the required procedures.

The proposed programmes are subject to assessment and approval. UNIZIK’s Director of Academic Planning, Professor Angela Ufele-Obiesie, explained that the process includes assessing the polytechnic’s facilities, obtaining Senate approval, securing the necessary approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) and paying applicable assessment-visit fees. The additional programmes have not yet been approved, and their introduction will depend on the outcome of these procedures. During the visit, plaques were also presented to the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar, Dr Chinenye Okeke, in recognition of their roles and service.
