OAUTHC College of Nursing Sciences, Ile-Ife

The Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) College of Nursing Sciences, Ile-Ife is one of the leading federal nursing institutions in Nigeria. The college is operated under the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex and provides professional nursing and specialist healthcare training for students across Nigeria. The institution is popularly referred to as OAUTHC School of Nursing or OAUTHC College of Nursing Sciences and operates campuses at the Ife Hospital Unit (IHU), Ile-Ife and Wesley Guild Hospital (WGH), Ilesa, Osun State.

The college is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) and currently offers National Diploma (ND) Nursing, Higher National Diploma (HND) Nursing, and Post Basic Perioperative Nursing programmes. The institution combines classroom teaching with intensive clinical training across the various specialist hospitals and medical units within the OAUTHC system.

OAUTHC College of Nursing Sciences is recognised for producing highly skilled nurses with strong clinical competence, professional ethics, and practical healthcare experience. Admission into the institution is highly competitive and candidates are selected through UTME, Computer Based Test (CBT), and screening exercises organised by the institution. The college also operates a fully digital admission and application portal where applicants can create accounts, apply online, pay fees, print examination slips, and check admission status.

History of the Institution

The OAUTHC College of Nursing Sciences evolved from the nursing training programmes established under the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, one of Nigeria’s major federal teaching hospital systems. OAUTHC itself was established to provide tertiary healthcare services, clinical training, medical research, and specialist healthcare education in Nigeria.

Over the years, the nursing school expanded from a traditional School of Nursing into a broader College of Nursing Sciences structure in line with modern nursing education reforms and the directives of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). The college now runs ND/HND Nursing programmes as well as specialist post-basic nursing programmes including Perioperative Nursing.

The institution has trained thousands of nurses, theatre nurses, and healthcare professionals serving in teaching hospitals, federal medical centres, private hospitals, military medical facilities, and international healthcare organisations. The college continues to modernise its admission system through online portals, CBT screening systems, and digital admission management processes.

KSP
Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja – KSP

Kogi State Polytechnic  widely known as KSP or KOGIPOLY  is a state government-owned polytechnic located in Felele, along the Lokoja-Abuja Expressway, Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State, North-Central Nigeria. Established in December 1992 by Prince Abubakar Audu — the first and second Executive Governor of Kogi State — through an amended Edict No. 6 of 1994, the polytechnic commenced academic activities in January 1993. It is fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and approved by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for technical and vocational education. KSP offers ND and HND programmes across eight schools covering engineering, business, science, agriculture, environmental technology, art and design, and general studies. The polytechnic also operates a second campus at Itakpe in Kogi State. KSP attracts over 10,000 applicants annually and is known for its affordable tuition fees and strike-free academic calendar — offering students a pathway to timely graduation. The current Rector is Professor Salihu Sanusi Avidime. KSP’s vision is to establish an institution where theory is blended with practice, imparting knowledge that will culminate in shaping the individual and society.

History of the Institution

The establishment of Kogi State Polytechnic is rooted in the determination of Prince Abubakar Audu, who served as the first and second Executive Governor of Kogi State, to build a strong technical education institution for his people. The polytechnic was formally established in December 1992 through an amended edict, and took off in January 1993, initially operating from the Government Science Secondary School, Lokoja, and the Osara Campus, with Dr. Isa I.A. serving as the first Rector.

The polytechnic’s establishment coincided with the creation of Kogi State from the old Kwara and Benue States in 1991 — which meant the institution grew alongside a young state eager to build its own institutions and infrastructure. From its early days, KSP worked to expand its academic programmes and physical facilities, eventually establishing a permanent campus in the Felele area of Lokoja along the Lokoja-Abuja Expressway, and a second campus at Itakpe.

The polytechnic has faced and overcome significant challenges over the years. In December 2005, hoodlums destroyed school property in a serious disruption to campus activities. In 2010, a tragic accident left 18 students dead — a sobering moment in the institution’s history. Despite these setbacks, KSP has continued to grow its academic accreditations, expand its schools, and secure TETFund support covering physical infrastructure, academic staff training, ICT development, library improvement, research, and entrepreneurship. The polytechnic now operates eight schools, has built an active research and publication infrastructure through two journals (LOJAS and LOJMAT), and runs a vibrant Directorate of Entrepreneurship.
