Bells University of Technology  widely known as BellsTech or BUT  is a private non-religious co-educational university located in Ota, Ogun State, South-West Nigeria. Licensed on 9th June 2005 and commencing operations on 1st July 2005, BellsTech holds the historic distinction of being Nigeria’s first private university of technology. The university was established by The Bells Educational Foundation, which is associated with former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and which already operated a chain of nursery, primary, and secondary schools prior to the university’s founding. With 5 colleges, 22 departments, and over 35 accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, Bells University focuses on technology-driven, ICT-powered, entrepreneurial education designed to produce innovative, practically skilled graduates. BellsTech is fully accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and is ranked 41st in the Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings 2024 and 59th nationally in Nigeria. The current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Jeremiah Ojediran.

History of the Institution

The idea of Bells University of Technology was conceived by The Bells Educational Foundation following a desire to build a unique university that would extend the strong academic foundation already given to graduates of its secondary schools. When the Federal Government opened the door for private university ownership in Nigeria, the Foundation applied for and received an NUC operational licence on 9th June 2005. Academic activities commenced on 1st July 2005, making Bells the first private university of technology in Nigeria.

The university began operations with a focus on technology-driven and ICT-supported courses that were transferable, relevant, and at the cutting edge of science and technology. Over the years, it expanded steadily from its original structure into five colleges and a postgraduate school. In 2013, the NUC approved Bells University’s postgraduate programmes, and in 2021, at the 12th Convocation ceremony, the university awarded its very first set of Ph.D. degrees — a significant academic milestone. In August 2025, the NUC approved 11 additional new programmes to commence in the 2025/2026 academic session, including software engineering and cyber security.

In 2024, 13 programmes received full five-year re-accreditation from the NUC following an evaluation exercise, including Accounting, Banking and Finance, Biomedical Engineering, Building Technology, Business Administration, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Economics, Estate Management, Management Technology, Mechatronics Engineering, Nutrition and Dietetics, Telecommunications Engineering, and Urban and Regional Planning. The university celebrated its 20th anniversary in November 2025, holding its 17th Convocation Ceremony at the BUPF International Conference Centre, Ota.

Notable research and institutional collaborations include a partnership with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) through the Centre for Agricultural Technology and Entrepreneurial Studies (CATES), a weather station on campus established in partnership with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) in January 2024, and virtual research collaborations with the University of Manchester and North Carolina University in the USA, initiated in 2024 and expanded in 2025. A 2025 MoU was also signed with the DePECOS Institutions and Development Research Centre (DIaDeRC) and the Academy of Innovative Research, Science and Technological Development (AcIRSTD).

One of BellsTech’s standout offerings is a fully tuition-free undergraduate programme in Agricultural Technology, supported by a scholarship worth over ₦450,000 — making it one of the very few private universities in Nigeria to offer a tuition-free course.

Admission Requirements

UTME (Undergraduate) Admission

• A minimum of five (5) O’Level credit passes including English Language and Mathematics, obtained in not more than two sittings in WAEC, NECO, GCE O’Level, or NABTEB.
• A valid JAMB UTME score of at least 160 — 180 (depending on course) is required. Candidates must select Bells University of Technology as their institution of first choice on JAMB.
• Candidates must be at least 16 years of age at the time of application, in line with Federal Government directives.
• All eligible candidates must obtain and complete the Post-UTME screening form and participate in the screening exercise.
• Candidates with awaiting results may apply, provided results are ready by September or October of the application year.

Direct Entry Admission

• Candidates with relevant A’Level passes, ND (Upper Credit), or HND qualifications may apply for Direct Entry.
• Relevant O’Level requirements apply in addition to the Direct Entry qualification.

JUPEB (Foundation) Programme

• BellsTech offers the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) A-Level Foundation Programme as a one-year pathway to Direct Entry admission into 200 Level.

Postgraduate Admission

• A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division from an NUC-accredited institution.
