Benue State University (BSU), now officially known as Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University, is a state-owned university located in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria. Established in 1992, the institution is recognized as the first state university in Northern Nigeria. It has grown into a major centre of learning, research, and professional development with thousands of students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The university operates digital academic and admission services through its official portal.

The current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Timothy Terseer Alabar, who assumed office as the 8th Vice-Chancellor.

History of the Institution

Benue State University was established by the Benue State Government in 1992 to expand access to higher education in the North-Central region of Nigeria. It began as Benue State University, Makurdi, and over the years developed into a multi-faculty institution with programmes in sciences, arts, law, education, health sciences, communication, environmental sciences, and management.

In recent years, the institution was renamed Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University in honour of Reverend Father Moses Orshio Adasu, former Governor of Benue State and key figure in the university’s development. Despite the new official name, many people still popularly search for and refer to it as BSU or Benue State University.
