History of the Institution
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, is a federal university of technology in Nigeria. The institution was established in 1980 as the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi (FUTB) and later renamed Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in honour of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.
The university was created to promote science, engineering, and technological education in Nigeria. Academic programmes began in 1982, initially under the School of Science and Science Education, and later expanded to include faculties such as engineering, agriculture, and environmental technology.
ATBU has grown into one of Nigeria’s leading universities in science and technology education, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across several specialized faculties.
