History of the Institution

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE) is Nigeria’s first petroleum university and one of the few specialized universities in Africa dedicated to petroleum and energy studies. The university was established in 2007 by the Federal Government of Nigeria to build capacity and develop expertise for the country’s oil and gas industry.

FUPRE was created to produce skilled manpower for the petroleum sector and to serve as a centre for advanced research and innovation in energy technologies. The institution began academic activities in 2008 with a small number of programmes and has since expanded to offer various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering, science, environmental studies, and management related to the energy industry.

Admission Requirements

Undergraduate Admission

  • Candidates must sit for the UTME conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

  • Applicants must obtain at least five O’Level credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and another relevant subject depending on the programme.

  • Candidates must select Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun as their preferred institution during UTME registration or apply for a change of institution through JAMB.

  • Applicants must participate in the Post-UTME screening exercise conducted by the university.

Direct Entry Admission

Candidates with ND, HND, IJMB, or equivalent qualifications may apply through the JAMB Direct Entry admission process.

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), has announced that its postgraduate admission form is now on sale for the 2025/2026 academic year. Both part-time and full-time programmes are open under the School of Postgraduate Studies, covering science, computing, and engineering fields.

Programme Duration for FUPRE Postgraduate Admission

The length of study depends on the college and the level of the programme.

College of Science and College of Computing

  • PGD: 2 to 4 semesters
  • M.Sc.: 3 to 6 semesters

The application is done online only. Steps include:

  • Visit the FUPRE postgraduate portal.
  • Pay the processing fee of ₦25,000.

Applicants must arrange their papers properly in an A4 envelope, with name and form number written clearly at the back.

So, here comes another shot at admission. The FUPRE supplementary Post UTME is up for grabs for the 2025/2026 session. If you missed the first screening or just switched your mind to FUPRE, you might want to sit up. The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun is opening the door again.

About the University

This school isn’t just another campus with chalkboards. It came alive in 2007, later backed by law in 2017, as Africa’s first petroleum university and the sixth in the world. Eligibility Rules

Not everybody can apply, so let’s break it down:

  • If you registered before but missed screening, you’re in
  • If you scored 170 or above in UTME 2025, welcome
  • If you changed your school choice to FUPRE, good to go

But wait, you must also hold five credits in O’Level subjects, in no more than two sittings. Your UTME subjects need to match your chosen course too.

Direct Entry

For Direct Entry folks, you need certificates that are recognised by NUC, NBTE, or NCCE. Yet, admission is closed for these courses:

  • Administration and Management Sciences programmes
  • Microbiology
  • Biochemistry
  • Petroleum Chemistry
