Breaking: NYSC Suspends NERD Compliance for Batch C 2025

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that it will not enforce the NERD compliance requirement for the 2025 Batch ‘C’ uploads. This update follows a recent decision by the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) to postpone its planned implementation date.

Earlier, the Federal Executive Council had approved 6 October 2025 as the start date for NERD compliance across relevant agencies. Following that directive, NYSC issued a circular on 7 October 2025 (reference: NYSC/DHQ/CM/M/373/VOL.3/81) instructing all Corps Producing Institutions (CPIs) to ensure that subsequent uploads were NERD-compliant.

NYSC Clarifies Current Position on NERD

With the new postponement by NERD, the NYSC management has confirmed that the compliance requirement will no longer apply to uploads for 2025 Batch ‘C’. This means CPIs can continue with their regular upload processes without integrating NERD compliance for this batch.

The NYSC added that this temporary adjustment follows official communication from the NERD Secretariat, which is expected to announce a revised implementation date in due course.

What This Means for Corps Producing Institutions

CPIs are advised to continue their registration and data upload procedures as usual. Once NERD announces a new compliance schedule, further updates will be shared with all stakeholders.

UNILORIN Graduates 316 First Class, 234 Ph.D in 2025

The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has announced that 11,886 students will graduate during its 40th Convocation Ceremonies, which also marks the Golden Jubilee Anniversary, celebrating 50 years of academic excellence and service.

During a press briefing on Monday, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN), shared details of the event and highlighted the achievements of the university over the past five decades.

 

 

According to him, the graduating students cut across different faculties and programmes, with 316 students earning First Class honours, 4,120 receiving Second Class Upper, 5,939 Second Class Lower, and 1,078 earning Third Class degrees, while 11 students will graduate with a Pass.

Breakdown of UNILORIN Graduating Students

Professor Egbewole stated that among the graduating class are 175 MB;BS, 94 Nursing, 40 Optometry, 36 Veterinary Medicine, 64 Physiotherapy, and 13 Diploma graduates.

He added that 1,520 higher degrees will also be conferred during the convocation, including:

  • 182 Postgraduate Diplomas
  • 916 Master’s Degrees
  • 188 Professional Master’s Degrees
  • 234 Doctoral Degrees (Ph.Ds)

The UNILORIN convocation and Golden Jubilee events are scheduled to take place from Sunday, 23 November to Friday, 28 November 2025.

UNILORIN at 50: A Legacy of Excellence

As UNILORIN celebrates its 50th anniversary, Professor Egbewole reflected on the university’s contributions to education and development, saying the milestone represents “five decades of dedication to learning, integrity, and public service.”

He acknowledged the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for its consistent support, which has strengthened the university’s infrastructure, academic training, and research capacity.

During the year under review, UNILORIN received ₦2.56 billion from TETFund, covering 11 focus areas such as staff development, ICT, entrepreneurship, and career services. The university also benefited from a ₦300 million zonal intervention, a ₦4 billion Special High Impact Project (SHIP) for upgrading facilities at the College of Health Sciences, and ₦750 million for a new hostel within the college.

These funds were officially presented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, in April 2025.

Support for Students and Future Plans

The Vice Chancellor also praised the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) initiative introduced by the Federal Government. Through this programme, UNILORIN secured ₦1.59 billion in student loans to support 12,983 students, ensuring that no one drops out due to financial hardship.

He reaffirmed the university’s pledge to maintain academic quality while contributing to national growth. “Our 50-year story is one of perseverance and purpose,” Egbewole said. “UNILORIN will continue to produce graduates who are well-prepared to impact their communities and the wider world.”

Just In: ASUU Suspends Warning Strike For One Month

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of its two-week warning strike, allowing the Federal Government a one-month window to complete the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and address other unresolved matters affecting Nigeria’s public universities.

The ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, made this known during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday. He explained that the decision followed productive discussions with the government and mediation efforts from the National Assembly.

 

 

Why ASUU Declared the Warning Strike

According to Professor Piwuna, ASUU declared the warning strike on 13 October 2025 after the government failed to respond to repeated appeals to finalise the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement and attend to lecturers’ welfare issues.

He said the union had exhausted all peaceful channels before taking that decision. “When we gathered here about 10 days ago to declare the warning strike, it was a painful move made out of necessity. The government had ignored several requests to resolve issues vital to the survival of Nigeria’s public universities,” he said.

Progress Made During Negotiations

Following the start of the strike, the Federal Government re-engaged ASUU through a committee led by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, which met with union representatives on 16 and 18 October 2025 to review the government’s position on the draft renegotiated agreement.

Piwuna explained that while not all issues were resolved, progress was made compared to the pre-strike situation. “We have not achieved every objective, but we are certainly not where we were before the strike began,” he said.

He praised the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education and TETFund, the Labour Committee, and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, for their role in mediating between the union and the government.

NEC’s Decision on the Suspension

After an emergency meeting held between 21 and 22 October 2025, the ASUU National Executive Council (NEC) reviewed the progress of discussions and concluded that the warning strike had achieved part of its purpose — compelling the government to resume negotiations.

The union stated that it suspended the strike to create a more favourable environment for continued dialogue, taking into account the interests of students, parents, the media, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and other Nigerians who showed support and understanding.

What Happens Next for ASUU and the Government

While the suspension marks a temporary truce, ASUU warned that if the Federal Government fails to address the pending issues within the agreed one-month timeframe, the union may resume industrial action without further notice.

Professor Piwuna reaffirmed the union’s commitment to improving public university education and urged Nigerians to encourage the government to keep its promises. “The struggle continues,” he said, stressing that maintaining harmony in the academic sector depends on mutual respect and genuine action.

NUC Approves New University of Innovation in Imo State

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has granted approval to the Imo State Government to commence operations at the newly established University of Innovation, Science and Technology in Omuma, Oru East Local Government Area.

The approval, presented by the Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, marks a major milestone in expanding access to higher education and empowering young people through knowledge and skill-based learning.

 

 

NUC Issues Operational Licence to Imo State

During the presentation ceremony in Abuja, Professor Ribadu officially handed over the university’s operational licence and certificate of recognition to the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma.

With this approval, the new university becomes the 70th state university and the 301st university in Nigeria. It also adds to Imo State’s growing list of higher institutions, bringing the total to eight universities—four state-owned, two federal, and two private.

Purpose and Vision Behind the New University

Professor Ribadu described the establishment as a strategic step toward promoting education, building the workforce, and supporting research and digital development across the state. He urged government officials, administrators, and students to work together to maintain academic integrity, quality research, and good governance.

The NUC will conduct a resource verification visit soon to assess human resources, infrastructure, and the governance framework. According to Ribadu, this process ensures that the university meets national standards before commencing full academic operations.

He said, “Our shared goal is to make this new university a true centre of learning and character development. The NUC will continue to offer guidance and oversight to help it reach its full potential.”

The Commission has already informed JAMB, TETFund, NELFUND, and the NYSC to integrate the university into their national programmes and support frameworks.

Governor Hope Uzodimma stated that the creation of the new university reflects the state’s commitment to providing more opportunities for young men and women seeking quality education.

He explained that the institution is designed to promote digital literacy, science, and technology, with a focus on developing students who can contribute to the economy through entrepreneurship and innovation.

The governor revealed that the university has entered a mentorship partnership with the University of California, Berkeley, through the Imo Digital City initiative. This collaboration aims to equip students with practical digital skills to create startups and jobs.

Uzodimma said, “This university is a response to the dreams of our young people who want access to good education. It will help them acquire knowledge and digital skills that prepare them for life beyond school.”

He acknowledged funding challenges but stressed the importance of prioritising education to engage the youth productively and reduce social vices.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced that the portal will run from Thursday, October 23, 2025, to Saturday, January 31, 2026, allowing eligible students across accredited tertiary institutions to apply for financial support.

NELFUND has called for continued cooperation from tertiary institutions to make the loan process accessible to every qualified student. Institutions are expected to upload verified records of both new and returning students on the NELFUND Student Verification Portal, which is a key step before any loan application can be approved.
